GEST alumni Chikondi Manyungwa awarded a GEST Ph.D. grant

GEST has awarded Chikondi Manyungwa a Ph.D. grant for her research project on the participation of women in the fish value chain and the value chain governance in Malawi, focusing on the villages Msaka by Lake Malawi and Kachulu by Lake Chilwa. The project examines both the factors that influence women’s participation in the fish value chain as well as perceptions of women’s participation in the value chain. Chikondi’s Ph.D. project will generate knowledge and information that will hopefully assist policy makers and development agencies in making informed decisions regarding policies and strategies affecting women’s participation in fish value chain and value chain governance in Malawi. Furthermore, the research project will develop recommendations for enhancing women’s capacities to effectively and actively participate in the intra-regional fish trade.

Chikondi Manyungwa received her post-graduate diploma from the UNU-GEST programme in 2013 and is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa.
