UNU-GEST representatives Dr. Thomas Brorsen Smidt and Anna Guðrún Aradóttir participated in the conference “Men, Masculinities and Gender Equality in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean: Interregional Dialogues”, organized by UNESCO and HOPEM, that took place in Maputo from 25 to 27 February. The main purpose of the seminar was to establish a framework for formulating constructive critical approaches to urgent issues around men, masculinities and gender equality in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

In a panel discussion on educating men on masculinity studies in Africa and Latin America, Dr. Thomas Brorsen Smidt introduced the UNU-GEST programme to the audience and went on to share his experiences with educating men from 10 different countries on masculinity issues. This was followed by a lively question round in which international scholars and audience members ignited a debate on the importance of epistemic justice, intercultural dialogue and South-South collaboration; all issues at the heart of the UNU-GEST programme.

During the three days the conference lasted, our UNU-GEST representatives established connections with scholars from Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana, as well as educators from Latin America and the Caribbean.
