Environmentally friendly arctic char farming

About 60 kilometers north-east of Akureyri lies the town of Húsavík with approximately 2,300 inhabitants. Here the fellows visited Haukamýri, a company specializing in arctic char farming from hatchery to finished product. Using high quality feed, Haukamýri puts emphasis on quality products and environmentally friendly fish farming. Pétur Bergmann, executive director of Haukamýri, and Kristján, site manager, took the fellows around the operation, showing the breeding techniques, filtration methods and sorting machines. Pétur showed Haukamýri´s main source of artic char eggs and the processing machines where the farmed fish are transformed into fillets and packaged. After the tour, the fellows were invited to taste the delicious Haukamýri smoked arctic char. Thank you very much for everything, Pétur and Kristján, and we hope to visit you again next year.
