Former fellow Marisa Kashorte visits from South Africa

Learning about former fellows after they return home is an important way for GRÓ FTP to understand the impact of its training.

In February, Marisa Kashorte, a fellow from the 2003 training programme, visited the GRÓ FTP office while attending the FAO Subcommittee on Fisheries Management meeting in Reykjavík. Ms. Kashorte is now a Policy Analyst with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment in Cape Town, South Africa. She represented South Africa at the meeting, which discussed issues including small-scale fisheries and sustainability challenges in developing countries.

During her visit, Ms. Kashorte spoke about developments in South Africa's subsistence fisheries sector. This was also the focus of her GRÓ FTP research project, Moving Subsistence Fisheries to Commercial Fisheries in South Africa, which she completed during the six-month training programme under the supervision of Dr. Ragnar Árnason at the University of Iceland, a world-renowned marine resource economist.

Ms. Kashorte told us that many of the recommendations from her GRÓ FTP research project have now been successfully implemented. We are always proud to hear about the achievements of former fellows and the positive contribution they continue to make to fisheries development in their home countries.
