GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme (GRÓ FTP) is proud to celebrate the achievement of Safina Musa, a former fellow (2013) from Kenya who successfully defended her PhD in Biology at the University of Iceland on December 15, 2025. Her doctoral research, entitled, Effects of aquafeed management on Nile tilapia production – environmental and economic consequences, focused on improving aquaculture practices for Nile tilapia in East Africa, tackling key challenges related to feed management, production costs, and environmental sustainability.

Safina’s work provides practical solutions for fish farmers and policymakers, showing how better feed strategies can reduce costs and minimise environmental impacts, contributing to more sustainable aquaculture development in Kenya and the region.

Her PhD was supervised by Dr. Helgi Þór Thorarensen from the University of Tromsø and Dr. Arnar Pálsson from the University of Iceland. Safina currently works as a senior scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute in Kisumu (KMFRI), where she works on advancing research and innovation in aquaculture.

GRÓ FTP congratulates Safina on her hard work and dedication in reaching this milestone and is proud to show how scholarship support for former fellows can help build fisheries and aquaculture expertise in our partner countries. We wish Safina continued success and look forward to her future contributions to sustainable aquaculture in East Africa.

Dr. Anders Kiessling, Professor at the Department of Applied Animal Science and Welfare, SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden joined as an opponent online.
