Value Chain workshop in Trinidad
The workshop was designed and developed in partnership with University of West Indies in Trinidad, Caribbean Fisheries Training and Development Institute, and CRFM. This is the second workshop on Value Chain in the Caribbean. The first workshop was held in Suriname, but the focus this time was on exploring how to identify and manage value chains in the Caribbean fisheries. In the preparation for this workshop the workshop development team met in Iceland to deepen their understanding of the value chain concept. The team also used the time to explore how the Icelandic fishing industry has moved from being supply driven to become a market driven industry with a policy on full utilization of marine resources and innovation.
About 23 participants from CRFM member countries came to the workshop, both from industry, academia and the government, and the workshop was also streamed on the internet for other interested people. Also at the workshop were former UNU-FTP fellows who assisted with running the workshop and shared their experience from the 6 months training programme in Iceland. At the opening ceremony Honorable Clarence Rambharat, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, addressed the workshop and Dr. Ögmundur Knútsson from University of Akureyri spoke on behalf of the UNU-FTP. The Value Chain workshop development team was composed of Dr. Dadi Mar Kristofersson (UI and UNU-FTP), Dr. Ögmundur Knútsson (UNAK and UNU-FTP), Dr. Susan Singh-Renton (CRFM), Dr. Sharon Hutchinson (UWI), Ms. Tullia Ible (CFTDI), and Mr. Thor Asgeirsson (UNU-FTP).
