Based on an MoU between the Government of Iceland and OSPESCA signed in 2014 the UNU-FTP has been developing relationship with OSPESCA, which is a regional fisheries organization in Central America. Since 2014 two fellows from the region have taken part in the six months training programme in Iceland, and to further develop the cooperation a two day symposium is being held in Managua hosted by INPESCA. UNU-FTP contributes through financial contribution to the symposium and also by providing expertise in two main areas of fisheries. Prof Maria Gudjonsdottir from University of Iceland and Matis, and Prof Dadi Mar Kristofersson gave lectures on innovation and product development in Icelandic fishing industry and on economic development in relation to fisheries management in Iceland. Thor Asgeirsson, the UNU-FTP director, will talk about the training activities with the help from former fellows, Mr. Keith Bennet from Nicaragua, and Mr. Alexis Pena from Panama. The outcome for the symposium will certainly help in developing activities with OSPESCA over the next few years.
