Six-month Training Programme underway

In an opening ceremony earlier today Þór Ásgeirsson, GRÓ-FTP director, greeted the incoming fellows and Þorsteinn Sigurðsson, director of the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, which hosts the programme, welcomed them into the house at Fornubúðir, which will now become their working place for the upcoming months.

After the session Brita Berglund, project manager from the Land Restoration Programme, organised a workshop with the newly arrived on group dynamism and setting of ground rules.

This year’s cohort includes 24 fellows from 15 countries ... in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. This year men are two more than women – thirteen to eleven.

The biggest line of specialisation is the Fisheries Policy and Management line (10), then Sustainable Aquaculture (6) Aquatic Resource Assessment and Monitoring (5), and Quality Management (4).

Even though the programme is officially under way, the last arriving fellows will not be in Iceland until Friday, just in time for the welcoming party planned for that night.
