GRÓ Governing Board 2026-2032 assumes office

A new GRÓ Governing Board has been appointed for the term 2026-2032. At a reception held last week to mark the changes in the governing board, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Ms Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, thanked the outgoing board for its work and welcomed the new board to the task.

The new Chairman of the Board, Mr Ólafur Stephensen, is appointed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Other new board members are Ms Halla Jónsdóttir, appointed by the Minister of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education, Mr Ragnar Schram, appointed by the Icelandic Development Cooperation Committee and Dr Antonio De Sousa Abreau, Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences at UNESCO, appointed by the Director General of the Organisation. Ms Sæunn Stefánsdóttir, who also sat on the previous governing board is appointed for a second term by the Icelandic National Commission for UNESCO.

Minister Gunnarsdóttir met with the new board at its first meeting. She congratulated the board members on their appointment and wished them every success in their work. At a reception last week where the previous and new GRÓ Governing Board members gathered, along with the staff of the GRÓ centre, the four training programmes and host institutes, the Minister thanked Mr Jón Karl Ólafsson, the outgoing chairman of the board for his work for GRÓ during the last 8 years. She also thanked all the outgoing board members for their work.
