Zazie Schäfer, the Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning at UNESCO (BSP), who took over as UNESCO‘s representative on the GRÓ Governing board in 2023, visited Iceland in February to familiarise herself with the work of GRÓ and the four training Programmes. In addition to attending a meeting of the GRÓ Governing board, Ms. Schäfer and other board members met the directors of the four GRÓ programmes, as well as fellows currently studying at the GRÓ Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme, and the GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme fellows specialising in Aquatic Resource Assessment and Monitoring.

During her visit Ms. Schäfer met with the Permanent Secretary of State, Iceland‘s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, the Chair and Secretary of Iceland‘s National UNESCO Commission and other Icelandic government representatives. She also visited the Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding, which is the other Category 2 Centre in Iceland. All Category 2 Centres fall under the Bureau of Strategic Planning which oversees strategy and planning, and all cross-sectoral work at UNESCO. GRÓ looks forward to welcoming Ms. Schäfer again in Iceland and to the continued good cooperation.
