United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme (UNU-GTP) in Iceland, Kenya Electricity Generating Company, Ltd. (KenGen) and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development – Department of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) will be hosting „Short Course on Geothermal Project Management and Development“ to be held on November 20-22, 2008, at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel, Entebbe, Uganda. The short course is scheduled prior and in connection to the ARGeo C-2 Conference to be held on November 24-28, 2008 in Entebbe. Announcement

UNU-GTP MSc Fellow Saeid Jalili Nasrabadi, from Iran, defended his MSc thesis at the University of Iceland on Friday June 20, 2008. The thesis was entitled "Open Heat Excheanger for Improved Energy Efficiency in the Heating of Hot Spas". Gudrún Sævarsdóttir and Halldór Pálsson were supervisors on the project. The external examiner was Páll Valdimarsson.

UNU-GTP MSc Fellow Jaime Austria, from the Phillipines, defended his MSc thesis at the University of Iceland, on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at 13:00-14:00. The MSc thesis was entitled "Production Capacity Assessment of the Bacon-Manito Geothermal Reservoir, Phillipines". Grímur Bjornsson (OR), Jónas Ketílsson (OS) and Páll Valdimarsson (HÍ) were supervisors on the project.

UNU-GTP MSc Fellow Daher Elmi Houssein, from Djibouti, defended his MSc thesis on May 5, 2008, at the University of Iceland. The examiner was Einar Gunnlaugsson (OR). The thesis was entitled “Geothermal Resource Assessment Through Well Testing and Production Response Modelling”. Guðni Axelsson (ÍSOR) og Ólafur P. Pálsson (HÍ) were supervisors on the project.

UNU-GTP MSc Fellow Sun Caixia, from China, defended her MSc thesis at the University of Iceland on Thursday May 29, 2008. The thesis was entitled "Feasibility study of geothermal utilization of Yangbajain field in Tibet Autonomous Region , P.R.China". Páll Valdimarsson was supervisor on the project.

The “Workshop for Decision Makers on Direct Heating Use of Geothermal Resources in Asia” was held in Tianjin, China, May 11-18, 2008. The event was co-hosted by UNU-GTP, Iceland and Tianjin Bureau of Land Resources and Real Estate Management (TBLRREM) and Tianjin Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration Development (TBGMED), China in co-operation with the Ministry of Land and Resources of P.R. China as well as the Municipality of Tianjin and several specialized agencies. The more than 100 participants mainly came from seven countries in southern and eastern Asia active in direct geothermal utilization for space heating, i.e. China, India, Iran, Jordan, Mongolia, the Peoples Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea.
