GRÓ LRT Fellows Visit Þórsmörk

The 2026 GRÓ LRT fellows spent last Friday travelling from Reykjavík to Þórsmörk and stopping at some memorable places along the way.

The day began with a visit to Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi, where the group had time to walk around, take in the scenery and, in true Icelandic waterfall fashion, get at least a little bit wet. From there, the group continued towards Þórsmörk, arriving at Básar in Goðaland in the afternoon, after a little adventure in one of the rivers on the way.

After refuelling with soup and coffee, the fellows had time to explore the area around Básar. Þórsmörk, being one of the first land restoration area in Iceland, is one of those places where it is easy to understand why field trips matter: birch woodland, mountains, glacial rivers and volcanic landscapes all come together in a way that is difficult to capture in a classroom.

On the way back to Reykjavík, the group stopped for a short hike into Nauthúsagil canyon. The hike added one more impressive landscape to the day before the group made a final short stop in Hvolsvöllur and continued back to Reykjavík.

It was a long day on the road, but a good one, with waterfalls, walking, and plenty of Icelandic landscape to discuss along the way.
