Successful completion of a course in Uganda on sustainable land management, land restoration and linkages to climate change
UNU-LRT ran its third short course on sustainable land management, land restoration and linkages to climate change, in collaboration with the Ugandan partners: the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Makerere University. The course took place in Soroti, Eastern Uganda, from 21 to 29 October with 25 participants, six women and 19 men.
The target group of the course were environment-, agricultural-, natural resources- and forest officers in districts in Eastern and Northern Uganda. The course consisted of five modules: Land literacy (1), Land degradation (2), Land restoration (3), Sustainable land management (4) and Global and local policy arrangements related to land health, climate change and biodiversity (5). Three field visits were undertaken where the participants got a chance to relate the lectures to real life situations.
The Icelandic lecturers in the course were Dr Bryndis Marteinsdottir and Dr Johann Thorsson, both senior researchers at the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland. The Ugandan team consisted of Dr Jerome Sebadduka Lugumira from NEMA, and Dr Daniel Waiswa, Dr Gerald Eilu and Dr Patrick Byakagaba from Makerere University. Furthermore, two former UNU-LRT fellows assisted with the teaching: Ms Gertrude Akello, lecturer at Kyambogo University, Kampala and Ms Joan Angom Atalla, District Environment Officer in Alebtong District. Additionally, former fellow Mr Moses Opio assisted with the execution of the course as well as Ms Bridget Nakyanzi, an intern at NEMA. A plan has been made to give another course in Uganda in 2020 with the same collaboration partners but in another district.
