Description

The UNU-GTP conducted the Short Course V on Well Design and Geothermal Drilling Technology for selected employees of EDA RENOVÁVEIS and the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada of Sao Miguel Island of the Azores, 18-30 January 2016.  The course covered the basics of well design and geothermal drilling technology through lectures and exercises, and one day was devoted to a field trip.  The participants also worked on group projects, which were presented on the closing day.  The course was attended physically by 12 people in Ponta Delgada, whereas 2 joined the classroom lectures and exercises online from Terceira Island.  Supervision and instruction was in the hands of Mr. Sverrir Thórhallsson, UNU-GTP Studies Board member and head of the Drilling Technology path in the 6 month studies, and Mr. Hinrik Árni Bóasson, UNU-GTP lecturer and engineer at Mannvit.

This short course was the fifth in a series of six short courses held in the Azores over the period 2014-2016 that are financed through the EEA Grants scheme.  Previous trainings that have taken place are Workshop on Geothermal for Decision-Makers & Short Course I on Geological Exploration of Geothermal Fields (September 8-20, 2014), Short Course II on Geothermal Utilization and Geothermal Power Plants (November 17-29, 2014), Short Course III on Borehole Geophysics in Geothermal Development (June 15-27, 2015), and Short Course IV on Chemistry of Thermal Fluids (September 7-19).  The remaining short course, on geophysical exploration for geothermal resources, is planned for April 4-16.
