Abstract

Decreasing pasture productivity mainly due to overgrazing by the increasing number of livestock is a major problem in the Kyrgyz Republic. The goal of this study was therefore to assess the current state of the pastures, using the Bazar-Korgon district as a case study, and to develop an effective approach to sustainable land management. Pasture carrying capacity was calculated using data on plant community types for the years 1950-2012 and a model for pasture management built on grazing quotas was developed.
