Women in Geothermal (WING) is a global network whose aim is promoting the education, professional development, and advancement of women in the geothermal community.  With 2500 members worldwide in 48 countries, it is one of the largest geothermal networking organisation in the world.

The annual Women in Geothermal - WING Awards are presented to honour outstanding individuals who express the four core values of WING:

  • Courageous
  • Empowering
  • Open
  • Caring

This year, the WING Caring Award was presented to Fríða Ómarsdóttir Environmental Scientist at GRÓ GTP.  The Caring Award is awarded to those who create safe work environments, are open minded and empathize with others’ situations, think beyond their borders; make the world their community, demonstrate social responsibility, and contribute to sustainable development.

We congratulate Fríða on this award which she dedicates to all the fellow women of GTP.

From the Award nomination:

"It is impossible to think of anyone more deserving than Málfríður Ómarsdóttir or Fríða. Fríða Ómarsdóttir is an environmental scientist at the UNESCO GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme in Iceland. She has a really down to earth and caring attitude which is what makes her an eligible candidate for the WING Caring Award. She makes sure to create a ‘home away from home’ for the Fellows who come for the training in Iceland. She takes time out from her busy schedule to give swimming lessons, ski lessons, Icelandic lessons, knitting lessons, as well as free haircuts to the Fellows. Thanks to her many of us can now save ourselves from drowning.

One can always come to her in case of any troubles in a foreign land. She also makes sure the Fellows learn about caring for the environment, recycling, and most important of all, gender equality. Despite the fact that most of the fellows come from developing countries where gender equality is not an important topic. Thanks to her many Fellows start to become conscious of the gender disparities in their own countries and try to do their best in order to change that.

She is the living example of compassion and selfless human being so no wonder wherever which country she goes, a warm welcome always awaits her.

So proud to present the WING Caring Award for 2020 to Málfríður Ómarsdóttir.
Many congratulations to you!"
