Workshop on Geothermal Energy for Ukraine
A weeklong Workshop on Geothermal Energy was held for Ukraine from 16-20 March, covering the full spectrum of geothermal development for both high- and low-temperature geothermal resources, including electricity generation and direct utilization, as well as geothermal business models, environmental considerations, and the legal frameworks that shape geothermal projects.
The participants from Ukraine represented a broad range of organizations, including oil and gas companies, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, and NGOs working in geothermal energy projects. Presentations at the Workshop were in the hands of experts from the GRÓ GTP, ÍSOR, COWI, Elements at BBA//Fjeldco, and Intellecon.
The Workshop concluded with a field trip on the last day, offering participants firsthand insight into Iceland’s current state of geothermal development. The visit included Hellisheiði Power Plant and Carbfix, as well as the unmissable Bananahouse at the Sudurland College of Hveragerði, and Tomato Greenhouse farm of Friðheimar. Short stops were also made at some of Iceland’s most iconic natural sites such as Gullfoss, Geysir, and Þingvellir National Park.
Hopefully this Workshop will spark an inspiration for Ukraine to utilise their geothermal resources to the benefit of their country.
