Nearly 50 Years of Achievements by the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme
It’s remarkable to think that Iceland was still classified as a developing country up until 1976. Around that same time, Icelanders began considering how they could best contribute to development and prosperity around the world, as a donor country in international development cooperation.

GRÓ GTP topic of the first event in a series on the development impact of the GRÓ Training Programmes
Join us for the first event in a series highlighting Iceland’s contribution to global capacity building through the four GRÓ Training Programmes, a key component of Iceland‘s international development cooperation. This first session focuses on the Geothermal Training Programme (GRÓ GTP), an intiative established in 1978 designed to strengthen geothermal exploration and development in countries with geothermal potential.

GRÓ Land Restoration Training Programme graduated 19 fellows
The GRÓ Land Restoration Training Programme (GRÓ LRT) celebrated the graduation of 19 specialists in sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration this week at a ceremony held at the Agricultural University of Iceland, Keldnaholt campus. This marks the 18th graduating cohort since the programme was established in 2007.

GRÓ LRT Fellows Present Their Final Projects
On August 19 and 20, the GRÓ LRT fellows of 2025 presented their final projects at an open seminar held at the Keldnaholt campus. The fellows shared the results of their research projects, developed under the supervision of experts from various institutions in Iceland.

GRÓ GTP and LRT fellows visit the President of Iceland
Fellows from the GRÓ Geothermal and Land Restoration Training Programmes and staff of the GRÓ centre and the two training programmes, were invited on the 18th of August to Bessastaðir, the Icelandic Presidential Residence to meet with the President Halla Tómasdóttir.

A Day in Þórsmörk: Waterfalls, Wilderness, and Ecosystem Restoration
Last Friday, the GRÓ LRT fellows went on a one-day field trip to the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, with a focus on ecosystem restoration, resilience, and disaster risk reduction, along with some sightseeing.
